Dr Ong Kong Wee (Breast Surgeon) is the Medical Director of Concord International Hospital and he also heads the Women’s Centre at CIH.
Dr Ong’s clinical interests include Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy, breast-conserving surgery and breast reconstruction for breast cancer.
Besides being responsible for providing clinical advice to the Board of Directors of the hospital, he was the Head of the SingHealth Duke-NUS Breast Centre from 2014 to 2018, which is the largest centre in Singapore treating the full spectrum of breast conditions. He continues to serve as a Visiting Consultant at the National Cancer Centre Singapore.
Dr Ong graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1997. During medical school, he was on the Dean’s List every year and won several medals and book prizes, including the Academy of Medicine Bronze Medal, the Beecham Book Prize for being the best student in Anatomy, and the Nestle Book Prize for the best student in Paediatric Clinical Clerkship. Upon graduation, he pursued his interest in translational science at the University of Bristol, graduating with a PhD in Immunology in 2003. He has been a Fellow in General Surgery at the Academy of Medicine, Singapore since 2007.
Dr Ong handles a large volume of both local and international patients every year. He has also been appointed as Regional Medical Consultant to Becton Dickinson in the area of minimally invasive breast biopsies such as vacuum-assisted needle biopsy and hookwire localisation in 2018.
Dr Ong has a keen interest in breast cancer research and has many publications in journals such as Nature Genetics, Lancet Oncology and Clinical Cancer Research. In 2012, Dr Ong was appointed the Director of Resident and Student Mentorship at the Academic Clinical Program (Surgery) in SingHealth to promote research in young aspiring surgeons.
Dr Ong is actively involved in medical education and training. He is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, and Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School. He is also a Clinical Physician Faculty for the SingHealth General Surgery Residency Program. In recognition of his contributions, Dr Ong was awarded with the Outstanding Faculty Award in 2014. He is frequently invited to speak at breast cancer conferences and also conducts many surgical workshops in the region.
Patient care is of paramount importance to Dr Ong. He strongly believes that despite his many academic and administrative roles, he can continue to provide a good clinical experience to his patients to achieve a positive clinical outcome. His efforts have been recognised at the National level, having won a Special Mention in Customer Service (Healthcare) category at the Singapore Experience Awards in 2009, a Silver Award at the Singapore Health Quality Service Awards as well as the 20-year Long Service Award at SingHealth in 2018.
